Mar. 03, 1961 - World's First Vertical take-off fighter flies for first time.: The Hawker P. 1127 - the world's first vertical take-off fighter, flew for the first time on Monday. In earlier trials the wonder jet hovered a fiew feet above the ground by directing its thrust from the Bristol Siddeley BE53 engine downwards, on Monday, the Hawker Chief Test Pilot, Bill Beford, flew the machine for twenty-two minutes from the Royal aircraft Establishment at Bedford- but he took off and landed the straight-up plane in the normal way, along the ground The P. 1127 is designed by Sir Sydney Camm, whose Hurricane fighters helped beat the German air force 20 years ago. photo shows the first air-to-air pciture of the Hawker P.1127, during its flight
