Dec. 17, 1960 - 17-12-60 Aircraft disaster in Munich. Students in machine on way to London for Christmas holiday An inferno of flames swept the main street of Munich, Germany this afternoon when a Convair Transport aircraft of the United States Air Force crashed on to a tramcar filled with Christmas shoppers. Thirty people are believed to have been killed in the tram. It is believed that there may be some survivors from the aircraft which was carrying 13 American students on their way to spend Christmas with parents in England and a crew of seven. The machine was a U.S. Air Force C-131 Convair Transport, and it had just taken off at Munich Riem Airport, scene of the Manchester United aircraft in February 1958.
