May 05, 1962 - The R.A.F. Prepares For The Royal Tournament. Fifty Years Of Aviation: A Cavalcade of Flying - is the theme of the R.A.F. contribution to the Royal Tournament which opens at Earls Court in July. It illustrates fifty years of aviation from the days of the hot-air balloon (1783) to a space-ship of the future. The Space-ship has been constructed by men of the R.A.F. from Unserviceable nose-cones -paint tins etc.- at a cost of nothing. The display was open to members of the Press at Kenley, Surrey today. Photo shows Spaceman - S.A.C. Patrick Whitmore stands in front of a hot-air balloon of 1783 style - while W.O. II S.W. Davis, dressed as a pilot of 1912 vintage - stands in front of a mock-up of a Sopwith Camel aircraft of the same period - at Kenley today
