May 22, 1963 - Ornithopter man: 32 year old Alan Stewart of Greenhill, Sheffield is making a bid to win the ?5, 000 prize offered by the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain for the first man powered flight of one mile. The machine is designed to imitate the movements of a bird in flight by moving its wings up and down and forward and backwards by means of furious pedalling. So far the machine has cost him ?100. Photo shows a general view of Alan Stewart with his Ornithopter in the garden of his cottage after he had assembled it
