Apr. 14, 1965 - Artificial Islands To Aid Aircraft Chain Across The Atlantic: A plan to build a chain of artificial islands across the Atlantic to help aircraft communications and which has the backing of the Ministry of Aviation - has been announced. The cost of between 15, 000, 000 would be recovered by charges which the Ministry would make to airlines. The aim is to supply more reliable radio links between aircraft and land bases - as traffic increases across the Atlantic. The Islands will be gigantic buoys. Below each station, built by a submarine, with a double and fully insulated skin - would be a 16ft. wide metal tube which would go down 400 ft. into the ocwan. A Company called Seastation Communications has been formed to develop the North Atlantic chain and to extend the system to other parts of the world.
