Sep. 30, 1965 - Press Visit To The Kestrel Tripartite Squadron: The Tripartite Kastrel (P. 1127) Evaluation Squadron, was introduced to the Press today at R.A.F. West Raynham, Fakeham, Norfolk. It was formed with British, American and German Pilots, engineers, and technicians, to investigate various aspects of vertical and short take-off from fully equipped airfields, semi-prepared sites and unprepared sites.Development f the P.1127 V/Stol aircraft began as a private venture by the manufacturers in 1957, and in 1959-60 order were placed by the Ministry of Aviation for six prototypes. Initial funding for the development of vectored thrust engine was furnished by Bristol Siddley Engines and the U.S. sponsored Mutual Weapons Development Programs. The first began tethered hovering trials in October 1960, followed by untethered fight trials were made at the Royal aircraft Establishment, Bedfod, in March 1961. The first transition from vertical to horizontal light and vice verse were made ion September. 1961.
