May 05, 1967 - Dam Busters Anniversary. Lancaster Bomber Flies To Scampton. A Lancaster bomber in the wartime livery of Royal Air Force Bomber Command, made a commemorative flight from Biggin Hill, Kent, to R.A.F. Station, Scampton, Lincolnshire - home of No. 617 Squadron ('The Dam Busters') - to mark the 24th. anniversary of the raid that breached the Mehne and Eder Dams east of the Ruhr. On board the aircraft were several ex-617 Squadron aircrew who took part in the raid, including Mr. G. Rise and Mr. W. Townsend, dams raid pilots and Mr. D. Webb, a gunner on the raid. The Lancaster, a Mark 7 and an ex-French Navy machine was acquired by the Historic Aircraft Preservation Society from Australia some two years ago and flown the 12, 000 miles to Biggin Hill, where it has been a star state attraction.
