Oct. 10, 1967 - And now it's the Flying Pig by Bristol Siddeley A proposal to produce a giant high-speed, high-life, fast vertical take-off and landing jet transport called the Flying Pig has been submitted to the Ministry of Defence by Bristol Siddeley Engines. It is the invention of Dr. Stanley Hooker. This new craft employs the minimum possible structure, and derives its VSTOL capability from a simple four Pegasus engine lifting system which provides a high safety factor in the event of engine failure. Avery small, elementary wing is used which supports the total weight of the the vehicle only at cruising speed. At lower speeds deflected engine thrusts is employed to complement wing lift. The significant difference between this machine and a helicopter is that the Flying Pig, even at tree-top height, will cruise at nearly three times the speed of the rotary wing machine and still have greater range. In consequence, it is less vulnerable to enemy action, and has a much faster reaction time when the transportation of troops and equipment is required.
