May 07, 1969 - Royal Navy Phantom Jet Beat Transatlantic Air Race Record. The Royal Navy Phantom Jet which left New York this afternoon in the Daily Mail Transatlantic Airrace beat the previous record crossing by another Phantom, last Sunday, by nearly eleven minutes. The plane was piloted by Lt. Hugh Brake of the Royal Navy his record time was 5Hrs 19mins 16.93 seconds, the previous time was 5 Hrs 30mins 24 seconds. Photo shows Lt Hugh Drake the record breaking Phantom pilot rushing into the G.P.O. tower this evening
