Oct. 10, 1966 - North Sea Escort for Russian Bomber: Lighting Mark 3 fighters of No. 74 Squadron, R.A.F. Fighter Command, based at Leuchars, Fife, escorting a Russian Bison four jet reconnaissance - bomber over the North Sea about 100 miles from the cost at 37, 000 feet. Russian military aircraft, as well as Russian Trawlers, are constantly around the coast of Britain. Last week ten Russian aircraft were detected and 16 Lightnings male successful interceptions. Such flights by Russian aircraft give excellent training to the whole defence organisation of Fighter Command, which thus demonstrates it's constant alert and it's ability to detect and intercept aircraft at considerable distances from the United Kingdom
