Mar. 08, 1968 - A Delta air lines plane is hijacked and forced to fly to Cuba: A DC-8 passenger plane of the Delta Air lines, valued at million, was hijacked by one its passengers, Laurence Rhoes, a United States citizen from Florida. Rhodes, pistol in hand, forced the plane's crew to fly to Bavana where it landed at Jose Marti International Airport. The Delta plane had just left Tampa on its way to West Palm beach with 102 passengers on board. Rhodes has requested political asylum and the Cuban authorities are now considering his petition. The huge DC08 was delayed at Havana for about three hours, during which time the passengers enjoyed refreshments, cigars and Cuban Rum. After its unexpected short delay in Havana, the plane was permitted by the Cuban authorities to continue flying towards West Palm Beach
