Sep. 22, 1971 - Harrier Jump Jet Deck Landing at Greenwich: A Hawker Siddeley V/Stol Harrier jet today made a vertical landing and take -off from the deck of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Green Rover, moored in the River Thames at Greenwich, London, The operation was watched by senior officers of many of the world's navies, who were attending the Royal Navy Equipment Exhibition at the royal Naval College, Greenwich. The Harrier is the world's only operational fixed wing jet V/Stol (vertical or short take-off and landing) fighter and it is the first time a Harrier has used the deck of a ship moored in a river - though the aircraft has operated from the decks of 11 ships ranging in size from vessels with a helicopter platform up to carriers.
