Dec. 04, 1970 - Birdman's River Flight Attempt Fails: Birdman Walter Cornelius, a 161/2-stone Latvian wrestler and strongman, wearing a pair of wings made of canvas and balsa wood, yesterday attempted to fly over the River Nene, from the top of a 35ft-high supermarket in Peterborough. But instead, he plummeted straight into the river. Afterwards he said: I shall double the span of the wings to 20 feet and try again next month. Photo shows Walter Cornelius tries out his wings as he took off yesterday from the top of a supermarket in Peterborough - but he plummeted into the river
