Nov. 11, 1971 - First Airship To Be Seen In Britain For 20 Years Is Being Built At Cardington - Bedfordshire: The first airship to be seen in Britain for 20 years is being built at Cardington, the former RAF airship base near Bedford. More than 192-feet long, the airship - to be named Europa - is being built by the Goodyear Rubber Company, which supply airships to various American Government departments, including weather and coastguard authorities. The Europa is expected to be flown next April, and is expected to be seen over Britain at most of the major events. Photo shows Dick Widdicombe (the skipper) in charge of operations, who comes from Los Angeles, California, explaining technical points with the aid of a model at Cardington today
