Aircraft - Aviation - Balloons - Helicopters

Dec. 17, 1971 - Concorde 01 makes first flight.: Concorde 01, the first pre-production aircraft, is the third Concorder to fly, It has been assembled at the Filton works of British Aircraft Corporation Commercial Aircraft Division, and after taking off today form the Filton airfield, it flew to the Division's Flight Test Centre at Fairford, Gloucestershire where it will be based for its flight test programme. A minor defect in the under-carriage limited the flight of the aircraft today. It had been planned to fly the aircraft down the Bristol Channel as far as St. Mawgan, Cornwall, instead it came in earlier than planned at Fairford. Photo shows Concorde 01 - the first pre-production aircradt and the third Concorde to fly, taking off from Filton today. Externally, the immediate apparent diffence between the 01 and the prototype aircraft is the vizor, the upper retractable section of the hinged nose. In the pre-production aircraft, the metal vizor on the prototypes is replaced by the production standard fully-glazed vizor, whichm when raised provides normal forward visibility from the flight deck. Other external variations from the prototype design include smaller cabin windows (to meet a safety requirement of the certification authorities), changes in the wing-tip configuration larger main wheels and a heavier undercarriage
