May 05, 1971 - The Take-Off Was Alright.. Two dozen entries of magnificent men in their flying machines lined up for a contest to find the best flying machine in Devon - as part of the North Devon town of Torrington's Carnival Week. All sorts of ingenious apparatus was line up but few efforts got off the ground. Seconds after take-off (seen above), Bert Hayes's Morris-driven Concorde crashed into a wooden and metal shack and burst into flames (below). To the relief of the thousands of spectators, no one was hurt
