1971 - U2 Pilot Gary Powers In London For Publication Of His Book: Gary Powers, 41, the American U2 spy pilot shot down over Russia in 1960, comtemplated suicide as he parachuted from his crippled plane, he said in London on Monday. Mr. Powers was in London for publication of his book Operation Overflight'. He said: It seemed as if I had a lot of time in that parachute. I tore up maps in my pocket and thought of the phial of poison I was carrying for the first time on an operational flight I almost used it because I was afraid of what lay below me.
