Aug. 31, 1974 - Air Speed Record From New York to London Expected.: a New York-London air speed record of only two hours is expected to be set tomorrow (Sunday) when a Lookheed is expected to be set tomorrow (Sunday) when a Loockheed SR-71 Blackbird (shown here) of the United States Air Force arrives for the Farnborough Air Show. It will fly through a gate near New York at about 11 a.m. London Time at 80, 000 at. or twice the height of commercial airliners, and at around 1 pm pass through another gate some ten miles or more from the Sussex coast off Brighton to set the record. The Blackbird carries a crew of two who wear astronaut suits, is made of titanium and cruises at over three times the speed of sound or about 2, 000 m.p.h. It was designed, developed and built by Lockheed
