Dec. 02, 1981 - NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA. NASA Dryden's AD-1 pivots its scissor wing during a flight test. Researchers are uning the aircraft to check the wing's performance at different angles of rotation. They expect that application of the pivot wing to future supersonic aircraft would increase fuel economy by at least 20 percent. Flying at high speeds with the wing swiveled to oblique angles reduces drag, while placing it in the conventional position gives left necessary for take-off. Test pilots Thomas McMurtry and Fitshugh Fulton each have flown the airplane with the wing pivoted to its maximum of 60 degrees
