Nov. 11, 1966 - The tri-service XC-142A a new transport aircraft made its official entry on the aviation scene June 17, 1964, in Dallas, Texas. The unique tilt wing aircraft is designed to take off and land vertically like a helicopter and fly at speeds of more than 400 miles per hour. Designed to carry 32 fully equipped combat troops or 8, 000 lbs of cargo, the aircraft is designed to transport troops or supplies to end from inaccessible areas. The XC-142AM which is one of the three vertical takeoff and landing (Vidl) aircraft being developed under a present tri service programme, was developed by the US Air Force at Department of Defense direction. The prime contractor for the aircraft is LTV Vought Aeronautics Division of the LTV Aerospace Corp. This photo was taken during a demonstration at Edwards AFB, California, in October 1966.
