Sep. 09, 1954 - Marshal Tito says We cannot join Nato: meeting with U.S. special envoy: Marshall Tito the President of Jugoslavia said in Belgrade yesterday that the Atlantic Pact was increasingly assuming a political hue - a struggle against Communism He rejected suggestions that Jugoslavia should join the alliance and said There is no place for us in a bloc with an anti-Socialist tendency'. He did not mention the Trieste problem - although he had conversations previously with Mr. Robert Murphy the United States special envoy. He also spoke in favour of sovereignty for West Germany which should allow her to be re-armed to a degree which would not allow her to become too militaristic.
