Alex Metreveli, Russian tennis player, Wimbledon

Jun. 06, 1964 - Metreveli withdraws from Wimbledon - on Political grounds: 19 year old Russian No. 2 tennis player Alex Metreveli today withdrew from his third round singles match against South Africa's Abe Segal at Wimbledon as a protest against South Africa's Apartheid racial policy. The Russian Embassy stated that no pressure had been brought to bear on Metreveli, but it was against their policy to compete with South Africans.
