Alex and Ute Hoffman swim to freedom
Nov. 11, 1963 - East German Couple swam into freedom: Alex Hoffman a 36-year old engineer and his 20 year old wife Ute escaped to freedom when they jumped the Bosphorus near Istanbul from aboard the communist vacation ship peoples friendship on which they had booked a trip to the Black Sea. The couple were granted asylum in Turkey and given plane tickets to the Federal Republic by the German consulate. After their arrival at the Gieben Refugee Camp Ute Hoffman went to buy some new shoes as her old ones were lost during the swim in the Bosphorus. Husband Alex happily helped her to fit her new shoes
