Feb. 29 Porgy and Bess the black opera comes to London.: Porgy and Bess George Gershwin's classic folk opera has now come to the Stoll Theatre in London and is performed by an entirely black cast. The story is simple and moving. Porgy, a disabled Charleston beggar who makes his rounds in a goat-cart, wins the heart of Bess, a woman of the streets after the disapperance of her lover, Crown, a murderer. Crown returns to claim her; Porgy kills him and while he is in gaol. she goes away with Sportin Life, a gambler and dope pedlar, to enjoy high life in Harlem.
