US Ambassador Robert Komer and wife arrive in Istanbul
Dec. 21 U.S. Ambassador Arrives In Istanbul Under Security Measures. Istanbul (THA) United States ambassador to Ankara Robert W. Komer, whose car was burnt by students a week ago at a Campus of Middle East Technical University, as he was having lunch with the rector, arrived in Istanbul January 16th, under strict security measures taken by an entire riot police force here. About two hundred white helmeted Istanbul riot police took positions around Istanbul's Yesilkoy airport, hours before the arrival of Komer, to prevent any student demonstration. Ambassador Komer is disliked by leftists here because he was the chief United States mission in Saigon before he was appointed to Ankara, and he had served in Central Intelligence Agency for some years. Ambassador Komer, who is nicknamed Butcher of Vietnam by leftist students will be guarded by police detectives and riot police during his stay in Istanbul. Our picture shows Mr. and Mrs. Komer shortly after their touch down at Yesilkoy airport on board a US Air Force plane
