Some competitors are local cowboys from the cattle ranches, but most of the money is taken by the pro's who ride the circuits and end up in Calgary in mid-July for the fattest prizes at the Annual Stampede. many make a full year's wage packet in just the month of July. They enter for any event, the cowpoke puts up his entry fee in the form of a bet against the other riders. This varies from about 20 dollars to over a hundred in some of the big rodeos. This, with about from the gate, makes up the prize money and the losers take nothing.
