Ancient Oak at Lowther Castle near Penrith
Sep. 09, 1961 - pose problem for Earl: Jack's Yak is an Oak-tree - so named because it was planted in the reign of King John, 700 years ago - and a problem to the earl of Lonsdale, upon whose grounds it stands at Lowther Castle, near Penrith. For the legend has it that if a main bough falls from the trees it foretells the death of the reigning earl of Lonsdale. so in the past years boughs have been propped up to prevent them from toppling and in one case a bough was sawn off.
