Threatened With Extinction - New Regulation May Yet Save The Vicuna In The Andes. Recent picture showing the Vicuna in its natural habitat. It is rare for this shy animal to allow a cameraman to approach close enough for good photography. The Vicuna, a rare South American relative of the camel and the LLama, is threatened with extinction, and the Government ban, announced this week, on the import of Vicuna hair and skin, is the result of a campaign by the World Wild Life Fund who say there are fewer than 10, 000 Vicunas in existences. Vicuna in recent years has become popular as a sign of male as well as female opulence. In La Pos, Bolivia, skins of Vicuna are still available in the shops despite the recent convention signed between Bolivia and Peru, to ban trading. A good Vicuna bedspread-bedcover costs between £30 - £100 in a Paz, but by the time it reaches Europe the price has risen to £200 - £500. This trade has been the main cause of the sharp decline in the number of the species, and threat to ultimate survival
