Animals - Aquariums - Archeology - Insects - Fossils - Zoos

Jan. 10 Bronx, N.Y. -- The Bronx Zoo's two Kodiak bear cubs explore the private den they share with their mother, Cleo. The cubs born Feb.2 are Cleo's first. They will lose their white collars as they mature, changing to the uniform brown of adult Kodiak bears. Kodiak bears, native to Alaska's Kodiak Island, are the largest living carnivores and may reach a length of nine feet. But a birth, the Cubs are tiny, hairless and helpless. Weighing as little as a pound, newborn Kodiak bears are blind and incapable of much coordinated movement. Zoo mammalogists are taking care not to disturb the mother and cubs, so that the sex of the cubs has not yet been determined
