Feb. 25 Chimp's Pipe of Peace Billy the kid, an eight-year-old chimpanzee of Cromer Zoo in Norfolk, England, has been a bachelor all his life and in need of a hobby to hold his interest. Like many zoo chimps he has been offered countless cigarettes by visitors and developed a taste for the weed'. Smoking has always soothed his nerves, but of late his master, Alexander Kerr, has been trying to make him kick the habit, but in vain. He has been worried about smoking ruining his health, for a chimp's lung are susceptible to almost everything. But Billy the Kid became very irritable without his smoke, and in fact, quite a danger to anyone within arm's reach of his bars, so Alexander tried him on a pipe, which he doesn't inhale as he does cigarettes, and it worked like a charm. Now Billy has a frequent soothing smoke. He's much better tempered, says Alexander, He can even light his own matches. Billy is seen in these pictures lighting up his pipe and having a quiet smoke in his cage
