John's Comings And Going Are Made Known By Personal Heralds': There's never any quarelling in the Swindells household in Portsmouth. Meals are always ready, warm and never spoiled by unexpected delays in arrival of the menfolk. Reason? The Personal Pigeon Post, or private communications system run by young John Swindells, builders apprentice aged sixteen. His hobby is pigeon keeping (he has already a few small prizes and hopes for bigger things later on). But two of his 16 birds are housetrained pets and expert message carriers. He takes them with him wherever he goes, and just before leaving for home from work or play, he sends one of them off with a warning of his coming. If there is a sudden change of plan, the other is still in the basket as a reserve. And so, Little Wonder and Little Hope help to maintain an atmosphere sweeter than in many a home where a young man is apt not to tell his mother if he is going to be unexpectedly late or early, and yet always wants his tea and dinner on the table
