Feb. 25 MAMFE AND ASSUMBO THE GROWING GORILLA BABIES OF JERSEY. Mamfe and Assumbo, both nearly 2 years old and the eldest of the ever increasing Gorilla Colony at Jersey Zoo -(4 babies have been born in the past two years) are growing fast. They are becoming quite a handful for nurse Jeremy Usher Smith. Jeremy has taken care of the Gorillas since their rejection by their mothers at birth ( a common problem in Gorilla breeding in captivity). Mamfe and Assumbo are both male babies, they have the same father, Jambo, a hefty gorilla from Basle Switzerland, and Mamfe's mother is N'pongo and Assumbo's Nandi. The babies are being given all the care and attention that is lavished on human babies - all in the interests of Science, to see how they grow and learn. in comparison to humans. The Jersey Gorilla births are highly applauded in Wildlife World, as being one of the most successful breeding exercises of captive Gorillas in the World. Even a Gorilla sucks his thumb: Gorilla Assumbo
