Mar. 31 Smart dog who located starving girl in Japanese alps gets special decoration: Before a big crowd at Ueno Zoo, Tokyo a German Shepherd named Chic Brooks received a special decoration collar from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police department for finding a girl lost in the mountain for a week and at the point of dying from starvation. Miss Haruko Sakai, age 18, a third year student of the Seika Senior High School at Osegahara, Nikko got separated from a party of climbers in the Japanese Alps on August 9. All efforts to find her were fruitless, and the search was abandoned after a week. It was then that the dog was brought to the mountains as a last resort, and she located the girl in two hours almost dead from starvation and exposure.The smart dog, a female of seven years, is owned by Mr Naoyoshi Uchida of Fukagawa, in the Koto Ward. Miss Sakai the rescued girl is still in hospital recovering from her experience
