Dec. 12, 1962 - Austrakian death round-up 4, 000 horses for slaughter.: The biggest horse slaughter in Australian history has begun. Four thousand wild horses - some with foals - are being brought to Sydney - where they will be killed for pet food. Planes - motorcycles and horsemen will be used to round them up on 4375 square mile Bulloo Downs, the roans - piebalds and proud blacks - will be herded in the morning and evening when they come down from the hills for water. The plan a will stampede them for 20 miles until they become footsore and tired. The motor-cyclists will bring the horses within reach of experienced horsemen. They will be taken by rail on the 512 mile journey to Sydney slaughter - yards. It is estimated that 10, 000 wild horses were roaming on the Bulloo Downs - and each animal eats twice as much as any of the cattle on the property. They also roll in water holes and pollute the water. Photo shows wild horses on the run - on the Bulloo Downs - Australia. They are being rounded up for slaughter
