Jan. 20, 1961 - The Penny-In-The-Slot Chimps - At London Zoo: Some of the Chimpanzees at the London Zoo are now being paid wages - and they know just how to spend them too. The Chimps earn a penny every time they perform a trick for the visitors - such as walking the tight-rope; standing on a ball etc. They place the penny in the slot of a machine in their den - and collect delicacies - such as nuts - grapes- biscuits - rains etc. Photo shows Fifi - puts a penny into the slot - and out comes a grape success
