Nov. 11, 1963 - Baby Zamba Makes History. The little chap with the pink socks who looks a little unsteady on his feet, has a special claim to fame, for he is an okapi, ad what is more he is the first okapi ever to be born in Britain. The okapi is an extremely nervous creature, and attempts have been made to breed them ever since 1900 when the first one was captured, but none of them have ever overcome their nervousness sufficiently to start a family. The 40lb baby here, called Zamba, was born at the Bristol Zoo, and officials there found that the only way to keep a close watch on the Okapis was to use closed circuit television as they were so nervous. They missed the actual birth, as it occurred at night after 435 days instead of the expected 446 days, and a day or two before a night watch was to be started. Zamba's parents are mother Bakeda and father Mayenga. Photo Shows:- Zamba with his mother Bakeda at Bristol
