Sep. 09, 1962 - Kangaroo Slaughter Condemned: An outcry has been raised in Australia against the wholesale slaughter of kangaroos by professional and amateur hunters. The kangaroos fetch 15 shillings a head from canning companies which sell the meat as pets food, others hunt them for their hides. An estimated 10, 000 are killed every week - a rate which, a naturalist warned recently, could soon wipe out the species. Animal welfare societies have asked the Federal Government to step in - there is no law limiting the number of kangaroos which may be killed, because organized killing has been necessary when they reach pest proportions. Photo shows A mother kangaroo lies dying from a hunter's bullet while her joey looks on bewildered, too young to flee
