Jul. 07, 1966 - Donkeys join the lifeguards - but only for a week: Wellington Barracks, the home of the Guards, has some unusual recruits. Billeted next to the glistening chargers of the Life Guards are half-a-dozen little donkeys.They have been called to the colours, for a week, to help at the market and fair in Dean's Yard, Westminster, from July 19 to 23 in connection with Westminster Abbey's 900th anniversary celebrations. It is the first time in the long history of the famous barracks that donkeys have ever been stabled there. For five days next week they will give children rides in a Governess cart round Dean's Yard helping to raise money for charity. The market and fair will be opened by Mrs. Harold Wilson, wife of the Prime Minister next Tuesday.
