Aug. 08, 1966 - The Problem Child Of The Penguin World: You can lead a penguin to the water but, apparently you can't guarantee he'll tank you for it. That's what keepers at Manchester's Belle Vue Zoo discovered when they tried t teach 4-months old baby Penguin, Peter, to swim. For Peter is unique in the penguin world.. he hats water. and has been giving the zoo quite a headache, not to mention the Peter's fault; he didn't have the advantages of a normal penguin upbringing. Soon after he was born he was rejected by his parents and sent to coventry by his fellows. In fact, the other penguins made it so rough for him that he had to be taken away for his own safety. Since then he has been hand fed and reared by keeper Albert Nuttall and willing helpers from the zoo's staff. But the time came, when Peter had to be introduced to the inevitable facts of penguin life and learn to swim, so that the could be re-united with his kin - folk without being a misfit from the start. That was when Peter's aversion to water first came to light. The moment he was dropped in at the deep end of the children's zoo pond, he just floundered around and scrambled towards the shore. Since then he has been undergoing a gentle persuasive treatment in an effort to acclimatise him to his natural element-part of the treatment is to give him excursions in an inflatable rubber dinghy.
