Sep. 07, 1967 - 7-9-67 Elephant dies at London Zoo The African elephant, called Diksie, died yesterday at the London Zoo. She had been catching food thrown by spectators when another elephant tried to bump it out of the way. Diksie fell 5ft into the trench built in front of the elephant compound and could not get to its feet. It tried, but Diksie, aged 27, and the oldest of the Zoo's four elephants was helpless. Not even the Zoo's crane could lift the elephant. Diksie nearly pulled it over. A stronger crane was brought, but it was too late. Diksie died before she could be rescued.
