Oct. 10, 1966 - Who turned Sam red: Question at the London Zoo is why permaganate of potash crystals came to be thrown outside the den of Sam, the Polar Bear. The crystals produce a red liquid when dissolved in water. And it was raining when the deed was perpetrated - so that when Sam rolled over in the rain (as he rather enjoys doing) he came up as the only red-backed polar bear in captivity.
