Mar. 09, 1967 - Lunchtime at Manchester Grammar School: The boys of Manchester Grammar School have solved the problem of how to fill that normally interminable period of the school day - the lunch break. Yesterday (Wednesday) they were spending the time betting on the outcome of races between mice and jumping contests between grasshoppers. And as they cheered on their favorites in one of the classrooms 16-year old Paul Hilton took bats of a few pence each, while another boy runs a hot dog stand. The gambling at the School, which has the highest level of University entrants in Britain, is part of a two-week charity drive to raise money to help victims of last year earthquake disaster in Turkey in which nearly 3, 000 people died. Some boys from the school were on holiday in Turkey during the earthquake, and helped in rescue and welfare work. Now the boys aim to raise 500 to buy a special tremor-proof prefabricated house. They will present it to the Turkish Government. The school Second Master Mr. Roger Stone said: The gambling is only a tiny part of the money-making ventures the boys have. We have junior boys washing cars, a mook Stock Exchange, hocvkey and tug-of -was matches, a fair with side show, film shows and raffles. The junoir boys are even running a shoe- clean service for 6d. If have contributed about 7s. 6d in one way or another. Are the boys likely to get a taste for Gambling Mr. Stone thinks no He said: We do not allow meetings after school hours as ikt might interface with the boys other pursuits and hobbies.
