Aug. 08, 1970 - Special Railway To See The Rhinos At Whipsnade: Today the Whipsnade and Umfolezi Railway get up steam to take visitors through a large and exciting new enclosure where 22 white Rhinos ream as if on the plains of their South African home. The steam engine Chevallier, built in 1915 and weighing 27 tons, pulls the train which gives visitors a close-up of this magnificent spectacle. The hard of White Rhinos consists of 8 males and 14 females. 20 arrived recently at Whipsnade Zoo from Natal, to join the pair which had been there since 1967.
