1967 - Julie takes a ride - on a Llama.: 13-year old Julie Cook would raise a few horsey eyebrows is he were to venture near the racing turf on this white charger, and she has already caused something of a scandal in the Llama compound at Flamingo Park Zoo, Yorkshire. For the fact is that Llamas just don't carry passengers - it's unheard of - and the other llamas were quite indignant about it when Julie rode her pet llama, Liberty, along their paddock the other day. they all huddled together looking quite cross and indigent as we trotted past and Liberty was quite naughty and superior towards them. If llamas could talk I'm sure my ears would have been bright red, : said Julie. Julie lives on the Zoo farm at Kirby Misperton, near Malton, and was given the 2-year Llama as a pet. I've been trying to ride her since Christmas, she said, but nobody believed I could manage it. It's been a long job because llamas are timid animals and no one has heard of them being ridden before - but I have just managed to break her in recently, and provided she's not being temperamental, we are getting on marvelously. When she wants to be awkward she just rolls over onto me - usually in the rose bed where it's rather prickly
