Jan. 01, 1971 - Rhinoceros with big muzzle born at zoo in Hannover: It was a sensation when on January 2nd a rhinoceros with a big muzzle (on the photo with its mother) was born at the zoo in Hannover. It is the first rhinoceros of this kind which hasn't been born in Africa. After the elephant this rhinoceros is the biggest animal in Africa. About 1900 it was almost extirpated, only some hundreds of these animals lived in the border-district between the Congo, Uganda and the Soudan. Due to the action rhinoceros these animals could be kept alive. 1946 the first rhinoceros of this kind was transported to a zoo in Praetoria (South Africa); since the fifties these rare animals have also been living in European and American zoos. So far three rhinoceros were born in zoos, all in Praetoria. The rhinoceros from Hannover is the fourth which hasn't been in Africa and it is at the same time the first European
