Nov. 11, 1971 - SQUIRRELS DIE IN AIR TRIP. Customs men and RSPCA officials at Heathrow Airport were shocked when they opened three crates from a plane. They found two gibbons and 100 squirrels- jammed into what appeared to be secret compartments in the crates. The gibbons were exhausted. Thirty-eight of the squirrels were dead, and three more died later at the airport's RSPCA center. Customs men immediately launched an international investigation. They contracted police and welfare organisations in Belgium where the KLM plane had come from.
