Mar. 03, 1971 - Tattooing of Domestic Animals in Vienna: Since some time domestic animals, mainly cats and dogs, are provided with numbers. Dr. Konig, chairman of the league against cruelty to animals and abuse of experiments on animals explained that with these tattooed numbers one wants particularly to take measures against dog-catchers, for not every institute will buy dogs with numbers. Meanwhile 105 Austrian veterinary surgeons have been provided with a tattooing machine which tattoos the letter of the respective country, e.g. V-Vienna, T-Tirol; the letter of the veterinary surgeon, e.g.D-Dr. Konig and a three-figure-number which is being announced and registered by computer. The inner side of the dog's thigh is being tattooed as there is few hair and the inside of the cat's ear. The treatment is completely painless. Photo shows Dr. Konig tattooing a greyhound - it gets the nr. VD 313 (V for Vienna, D for Dr. Konig and 313 as number)
