Jan. 01, 1981 - Primate mates: Vernon, the new male pygmy chimpanzee on breeding loan from the Stuttgart Zoological Society, wasted no time getting cozy with the three San Diego Zoo females of this rare and threatened species. Following his introduction this week, Zoo keepers reported observing breeding behavior between Vernon and exhibit-mates Linda, Loretta and Louise. In this photo, Vernon, left lounges with Linda. Zoo curators hope Vernon will rekindle the record captive reproduction success the Zoo enjoyed with Kakowet, a long-time Zoo resident and father of 10 pygmy chimps, who died of kidney disease in August. Only 32 pygmy chimpanzees are in captivity worldwide and aside from the San Diego Zoo animals. the only other pygmy chimps in the United States are a pair
