1980 - Revolutionary Welfare Veal System: Animal lovers can happily eat veal in future. The UK veal industry has been revolutionized by a new welfare production system developed by Quantook Veal, the largest veal producers in the country and part of the Voles group. Quantook with their associated company, Bellinger Brothere, specialists veal wholesalers, provide 90% of the retail veal in the UK. Gone are the traditional cramped veal crates and with them the reason for consumer resistance to veal buying said Mr. Philip Paxman, founder and Managing Director of the Volac group at a press conference to marking the change-over to the new system. On the Quantook farm near Barnstaple in Devon, calves live in groups of thirty in roomy, light, airy, straw-filled pens. They can move around freely, rumenate and groom themselves. Iron-laced milk is available on demand from teats of Volac feeders, this is a sharp contreat to the traditional Continental veal rearing method of calves kept in small individual crates, with artificial lighting and fed by bucket twice a day.
