Feb. 02, 1981 - There's a new face at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and with it comes a long, prehensile tail and lots of quills. This prehensile-tailed porcupine is one of five of this Central and South American species that recently went on exhibit at the 1, 800-acre wildlife preserve. Although nocturnal in the wild, the Wild Animal Park's porcupines can easily be seen in the daytime through the glass tunnel of the Tropical America atrium. Their be seen long, grasping tail and finger-like clawed paws enable them to scamper through the treetops of their native Latin forests. They weigh up to ten pounds (4.5 kg) and feed on leaves, tender stems and fruits, including bananas.
